New to dealing shares? Or just want to test a hunch? Once registered for sharedealing you can set up a Virtual Portfolio. You can create five portfolios, each with up to 50 stocks, so newbies can see how it works and old timers can fine-tune their strategy - without risking any real money.

Shares without the hassle

Convert any paper shares you have to electronic shares and we'll take over the admin in a 'nominee account', so there's less paperwork and no delays when buying and selling.

Your shares will be held in the name of our nominee company, instead of yours, and the account will be administered by HSBC Stockbroker Services on your behalf. Don't worry, you'll still have final say on everything. We'll just make sure your dividends are collected and dealt with as per your instructions. The main difference is that you'll no longer receive letters directly from the companies you hold shares in, and you won't get the normal rights and benefits associated with individual stakeholders.

• How do I buy and sell shares?

  It's easy. Simply log on to your Online Banking opens a new window and find your Sharedealing account, then select the 'Buy' or 'Sell' tab, choose the stock and enter the quantity.

  Or you can do it all over the phone, but charges are higher. Call us on 03 456 100 100 and ask for Sharedealing Services. Available: Mon to Fri 7.30am to 5pm and Sat 8am to 12pm.

• How long does it take?

  The proceeds of your deals and dividends will be transferred overnight daily (in one transaction) to your nominated first direct account. The money for any share purchases will be taken from the same account.

  We'll settle your equity share deals two working days after the date of the transaction (T+2) and bond trades one working day after (T+1).

• How do I know which shares to choose?

  Our research centre is full of tools to help you analyse the market, find interesting new opportunities and make informed decisions. But remember, we can only show you the information, we don't offer any investment advice.

• What is the FTSE 100?

  The Financial Times Stock Exchange 100 (or FTSE 100) is an index of the leading shares on the London Stock Exchange. The index includes the largest 100 companies listed in London (by value of shares issued) and is used as a general measure (and guide) to stock market performance.

• How do I find out about Best Execution?

  HSBC UK Bank plc is required to take all sufficient steps to achieve the Best Possible Result on a consistent basis, including where possible in situations of market stress taking into account a range of factors where price and execution costs are paramount.
